Maniaci

A year after the death of Pavarotti, comes the newest opera sensation: Michael Maniaci. The 31-year-old American is featured in Tim Albery’s production for Opera North of The Fortunes of King Croesus. It is the first performance here of this rare Baroque opera by Reinhard Keiser, who was a mentor to the young Handel. It had its premiere in Hamburg in 1711. Maniaci plays Atis, Croesus’s son, a role that would originally have been sung by a castrato. He may be the only man on the planet who can sing this role at pitch, which goes up to a B natural, two octaves above middle C. Which makes you think: Is Maniaci a castrato?

But the Caped Crusader also has a darker side — his parents were killed by criminals, and that’s why he has set out to fight the bad guys. Batman avoids getting close to most people and is sort of a loner. So, your guy may share his dangerously dashing appeal, but you may also have to work a little harder to get him to open up.

What it reveals: This superhero goes from the quiet, reserved Bruce Banner to the big, green Hulk whenever he gets pissed off. Scary, right? Levi's

The most exciting thing in eBay even as we speak is the bidding for an old pair of Levi's. Old as in more than a hundred years old. This is the description:

This old pair of LEVI'S were found in a mine in the Rand Mining District, on the Mojave Desert,. California. They are covered in candlewax from the candle's the miner was using to light the tunnel he was working in. They were found with and old paper bag with the name of a mercantile store which operated between 1895 and 1898 in the town or Randsburg. Their was also a gunny sack with the initials A.P.K. and Randsburg marked on it. A.P.K. is through to be Adam P. Kuffel who was a partner in the mercantile store.

These pants have the cloth label vice the leather label. The label (pictured) indicates that they are size W34 x L33, They are copper riveted with the rivets marked L.S. & Co. S.F. They are buckle back (pictured) with suspender buttons. Buttons are silver in color and are all marked LEVI STRAUSS & CO. S.F.CAL. Tthe pants were made with just one back pocket on the right hand side.

The pants are in excellent condition with two small flaws. One hole just above where the left hand back pocket would be, which can be covered by a Quarter and one missing piece of cloth measuring approximatley 1/2 "by !/2" on the band just to the right hand side of the fly.

Last week, farmers in Santa, Ilocos Sur dumped thousands of tomatoes at the Santa Tomato Paste Plant in protest because of the very low price ceiling. The plant also refused to pay them for past dues. So right now, tomatoes are rotting in the area and the residents are complaining.

Last Lecturer

It was Jun Balde who kind of introduced me to Randy Pausch, the professor whose "last lecture" was a one-hour YouTube phenom and whose book Jun said would be the next great hit in the country. It didn't. Randy died Friday of pancreatic cancer. It's not it wasn't expected. In fact, he was given the diagnosis and Randy was given 3 to 6 months to live. He decided to give his lecture entitled "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," at Carnegie Mellon last September. On YouTube, more than 3 million watched that lecture. I watched it only last June only because Jun said and I was touched.

The first solar eclipse would happen on August 1.

The total eclipse begins at sunrise over Northern Canada's Queen Maud Gulf, where the moon's umbra will first touch down on the Earth, resulting in Canada's hosting its first total solar eclipse since February 26, 1979.

As the sun comes into view over the north-northeast horizon its disk will become completely blocked by the moon. This is in the area of the famous Northwest Passage, a sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic archipelago of Canada. The various islands of the archipelago are separated from one another and the Canadian mainland by a series of Arctic waterways collectively known as the Northwestern Passages. Politically, this region belongs to Nunavut, the largest and newest of the territories of Canada; it was separated officially from the vast Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999.

Although the umbral shadow narrowly misses the towns of Cambridge Bay on Victoria Island, and Resolute on Cornwallis Island, its northern edge just clips the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world: Canada's remote outpost of Alert, which lies just 508 miles (817 km) from the North Pole and has a population of just 5. Here, totality will last 43 seconds.

Crossing the open Arctic, the southern half of the totality path slides across the many fjords of northermost Greenland, coming to within 450 miles (720 km) of the North Pole at 9:38 UT over the Arctic Ocean before turning southeast. Totality sweeps over the Norwegian island group of Svalbard, while the northern edge of the umbra's path just grazes Russia's Franz Josef Land island group, then cuts across the crescent-shaped island of Novaya Zemlya on its way to central Asia. The umbra first touches the Russian coast on the Yamal Peninsula. Not far inland, greatest eclipse, producing 2 minutes 27 seconds of totality, is attained near the town of Nadym (pop. ~46,000), just inland from the boot-shaped Gulf of Obskaja.

Spending part of your summer in Siberia may sound a bit more appealing upon hearing that the central path passes almost directly over the city of Novosibirsk, Russia's third most populous city (pop. ~1.4 million) where totality begins at 10:44 UT and will last 2 minutes 18 seconds. The center of the path will then follow the Mongolia-China border for several hundred kilometers, with Olgij, Mongolia getting 1 min 36s of totality. Totality finally whisks into north-central China, crossing the west end of the Great Wall before leaving the Earth at a point northeast of the major city of Xi'an (pop. 3.9 million).

The northern half of Maine as well as the Canadian Maritime Provinces will experience a partial eclipse at sunrise.

Elmer Ordonez Hails Joi B and Chris M

The protests then in the early 80s revived the student movement in the midst of repression. Joi and Chris, both theater majors in UP Diliman, founded along with others Tropang Bodabil which presented Ilocula (Ilocano Dracula) in street demonstrations. Tropang Bodabil evolved into Peryante , and it is in one of its shows in 1982 that I first saw Joi as a performer. She would become a committed dramatist, poet, and Ph.D. credited with many scholarly and creative works.

I saw Chris Millado’s first play Buwan at Baril in Eb Major at the Faculty Center in 1985. His Panata sa Kalayaan (Ode to Freedom) in 1986 presented worldwide by PETA (Philippine Educational Theater Association) and other groups like Patatag would mark the celebration of people power after toppling the dictatorship. Chris directed Dong-Ao, (translated by Rody Vera), an Ilocano wake play where Pepe Samson, the activist character of Jose’s novel Mass, is mourned. Here type characters of the novel come alive and give comments on the life of Pepe.

Two other plays, Pamantasang Hirang (Sa Dilim Man) written by Tim Dacanay and directed by Hazel Gutierrez, a satire on fraternities and politicians, and Masaganang Ekonomiya written by Allan Lopez and directed by J.Victor Villareal, an expressionist and absurd rendering of state torture of insurgents against the backdrop of government claims of economic prosperity, constitute the political drama of that evening.

The launching of Savage Beast was preceded by a reading of excerpts from plays presented over the years by the Ma-yi Theater Company– plays included in the volume edited with a well-researched introduction and three more essays by Joi.

Joi says that the “naming” of Ma-yi (a precolonial term) theater company (founded in 1989 by Filipino-Americans in New York City) was an act of decolonization. Choosing not to take part in “the assimila­tionist discourse that dwells on Accept us, America!’, Ma-Yi, (says Joi) has concerned itself with the struggles of sovereignty in the homeland, the class struggles articulated by Carlos Bulosan, and the continuing tensions brought about by the global war on terror and neocolonial globalization.

She points out that the concept of pagdamay or empathy in the pasyon has led Ma-yi to transform itself into an Asian-American company. So far, my wife and I have watched only one full performance The Romance of Magno Rubio based on Bulosan’s writings, and the dramatic readings of three other plays included in Savage Beast. The book (available in Solidaridad, Fully Booked, Power Books, and A Different Bookstore) deserves a full treatment next time.

On the other, Jose’s Dong-ao seems to put a closure on the fate of Pepe Samson who in Mass is last seen saying good-bye to Tia Nena and Fr.Jess as he joins the NPA. There is a reference to Pepe in Jose’s later novel Viajero—a meditation on revolution.

I had wished for Frankie Jose to write a sequel to Mass (excerpted in Kamao, post-EDSA CCP’s anthology of protest literature) and was surprised that he had already written the play. Here Jose resorts to his device of getting different perspectives as in Vibora, a novel about Artemio Ricarte. In Dong-ao the other characters of Mass take turns remembering, eulogizing, and also chiding Pepe for living the life of an insurgent.

Inevitably speakers tell the audience more about themselves. The colonel (then the lieutenant who arrested Pepe) and Senator Reyes represent the views of opportunistic/corrupt members of society. Dr. Hortenso (said to be modeled after a marxist U.P. professor) comes off as an ineffectual revolutionary in his “I told you ” manner of addressing the bier of Pepe Samson. Fr. Jess is ever the sacrificing priest doing apostolate work in a poor parish in Tondo. It is the old woman in black (“the chieftest mourner”) who grips the audience as she wails with an exhortation that moves the youth among the mourners to rise and carry on the struggle of Pepe Samson –a denouement worthy of activist drama. Isang bagsak!

Chronic distraction, from which we all now suffer, kills you more slowly. Meyer says there is evidence that people in chronically distracted jobs are, in early middle age, appearing with the same symptoms of burn-out as air traffic controllers. They might have stress-related diseases, even irreversible brain damage. But the damage is not caused by overwork, it’s caused by multiple distracted work. One American study found that interruptions take up 2.1 hours of the average knowledge worker’s day. This, it was estimated, cost the US economy $588 billion a year. Yet the rabidly multitasking distractee is seen as some kind of social and economic ideal.

The green one is Lake Bosumtwi in Ghana. It is its only natural lake and caused by the impact of a meteorite some 1.3 million years ago. Surrounded by dense rainforest, the Ashanti people consider it to be sacred. They think it’s the place where souls of the dead come to bid farewell to the god Twi. Then the last image is the Kara-Kul in Tajikistan, at an altitude of 13,000 feet above sea level. The lake is actually located within a 28 milewide circular depression, which was hit by a meteorite approximately 5 million years ago, Kara-kul was only discovered recently, through satellite.
