• The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry.
• From A to X by John Berger. Plot synopsis: A'ida writes letters to her husband Xavier while he is imprisoned for insurgency.
• The Lost Dog by Michelle de Kretser. Plot synopsis: A Henry James scholar searches for his lost dog in the Australian bush while flashbacks detail his affair with an artist.
• Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh. Plot synopsis: A historical adventure set during the Opium Wars.
• The Clothes on Their Backs by Linda Grant.
• A Case of Exploding Mangoes by Mohammed Hanif. Plot synopsis: A fictional take on the death of Pakistani dictator General Zia ul-Haq, who died in a plane crash in 1988.
• The Northern Clemency by Philip Hensher.
• Netherland by Joseph O’Neill.
• The Enchantress of Florence by Salman Rushdie. Plot synopsis: The worlds of Mughal India and Renaissance Florence collide in this historical epic.
