I've switched to buying at the Amazon.com store. They offer their files in DRM-free MP3s. So I can now download until my wallet goes empty.
Tip: anyone can strip-off DRM off iTunes purchases by burning the files as audio CDs and re-encoding the CD into MP3 files. If anyone can't do even that, then they must really be lazy or don't really have that kind of dedicated commitment to hold on to their purchased investments from iTunes.
