Noel with the Umlaut and The Star


Noel Coward is one of my favorite put downers in history. Once he got a letter “From the Desk of…” which is what we also usually receive from cheap politicos and cheaper lawyers, and he replied, “Dear Desk…”

And this gem should be applicable to the Philippine Star, the newspaper you should read from cover to cover if you can get past the front page. One time, a journalist asked him, “Mr. Coward, have you anything to say to The Star?”

Coward answered, “Twinkle.”
