Now, I'm disappointed with Manila Bulletin. That is what they chose as their headline for January 1, 2008. What's wrong with "Nation Celebrates New Year" or "Nation Fetes New Year" or "Filipinos Toast New Year" or any "timeless" headline they conk up year after year after year? "New Year Welcomed with Hope" is passive and as any journalist student will tell, not good for a banner headline. And then, of course, because of the past tense, it meant that the country was already welcoming the New year with hope when we all know that the headline was composed on New Year's Eve. Oh well.
