Golf and ADHD

I know I suck at golf but you don't know the reason. My tee off at Camp John Hay shocked me because it was straight, far and in the fairway. My flightmates used the widest driver ever allowed and they had a 30-minute practice before hand. I just arrived and with just a swing, swing was on. My second shot also went nicely. a few meters from the green in the Par 5 hole. Then I lost my ball and then my marbles. It was also pickup at the Par 4 hole. I was still enjoying himself, and no longer as tense as I was in Baguio Country Club. My problem was, I was hot and then cold. My cold means I "looked up" and topped the ball. On Hole 5, I had to tell my caddy to remind me
1) not to look up. On the 6th hole, he also has to remind me 2) not to make kabig. smoothen your follow through. When I started reaching the greens consistently, he also has to remind me 3) to be patient on my putting. My flightmates must have been amused with me and my caddy but then I was the only one giving my caddy food and water, otherwise off limits to them. And we had the best fun after the 18th hole which I picked up because the flight still starting mistakenly hit our ball and we were playing with a no ball. So I hit a pine cone on my second shot and it hit the green, a few feet from the hole.

Christmas Songs

77 Santas. 77 Christmas songs downloaded.
Times Online has the 20 biggest CDs for the rest of the year:

18. The Police: Certifiable

They briefly reunited for a world tour and proved that while 20 years may have passed since their heyday, they could still rock. Now the band, headed by Sting, release a DVD and CD combo (two CDs and two DVDs) of the tour. Certifiable contains a recording of the group’s Buenos Aires concert (yes, Message In A Bottle and Every Breath You Take are in there) and footage of the tour. It is released on November 24.

14. Neil Young: Sugar Mountain

In 1968, the immeasurably influential Canadian had just left the band Buffalo Springfield and was on the brink of joining Crosby, Stills and Nash. With his first solo album in the pipeline, Young decided to see how he’d manage in front of an audience on his own. Choosing Canterbury House in Michigan for the experiment, Young quickly proved to an impressed crowd that he could fly solo. Now, 40 years later fans can buy a recording of the concert. Sugar Mountain is released on December 8.

6. Guns N’Roses: Chinese Democracy

After 14 years, £10 million and a constantly changing cast of producers, band members, and record company execs, Chinese Democracy will finally hit the shelves on November 24.

It might be the most expensive record ever made but at least it has a head start in the publicity stakes. No PR consultant could get the type of media coverage Axl Rose’s antics have secured. During the long, agonising making of Chinese Democracy, the frontman fell out with every one from the band’s original line-up, became a recluse and produced more than 1000 CDs and DAT cassettes of material.

Can all of the pain possibly pay off? Mr Rose clearly thinks so. He uploaded the whole album to the band's MySpace site this week confident that if fans heard a stream of the album they'd head to the shops come Monday.

4. The Killers: Day & Age

Do the Las Vegas band manage to reach the pop perfection of the much-loved singles Mr Brightside and Somebody Told Me on their third studio album? It’s a resounding yes according to the critics, who rushed to declare their approval for Day & Age when it was released this week. The chart-topping foursome hark back to the melodic arrangements and dark lyrics of first album Hot Fuss with singles Humanand Tranquilize, and according to Sunday Times critic Dan Cairns “trounce the competition.”

While Searching for the Ghosts of Pines Hotel, I stumbled upon the Old Photos of the Baguio Market

A friend saw an old woman while in a rest room at SM. She was looking at the Internet for the dead in the July 1990 earthquake. I told her that Pines Hotel was destroyed by a fire much earlier. So we Googled at the old Pines Hotel and found it. We also found these wonderful photos of the Baguio City Market in the mid-1950s.

    Aretha

RollingStone just named Aretha Franklin as the best of the best 100 singers of all time. Ray Charles is 2nd and Elvis is 3rd. The rest of the Top 10:

4 | Sam Cooke by Van Morrison

5 | John Lennon by Jackson Browne

6 | Marvin Gaye by Alicia Keys

7 | Bob Dylan by Bono

8 | Otis Redding by Booker T. Jones

    9 | Stevie Wonder by Cee-Lo

10 | James Brown by Iggy Pop

Mary J. Blige, who wrote about Aretha, is 100th. My question is: Where is Frank Sinatra. And Michael Jackson is only 25th? Where's Luciano Pavarotti?

    Summertime in November

Because we never had a summer. Really. (knock on wood) Because it may all be summer next year

    Genre

    Akimbo

Much was written about Rahm Emanuel, Obama's transition right-hand man, in this photo during the President-elect's presscon. He was the one with arms akimbo. Some said that this is a foreboding of a Dick Cheney Jr. Others said he has a Napoleon complex especially with the tall people beside him. Others hinted at Superman. Hey! My take on this is: Rahm used to be a ballet dancer. This is normal. He is waiting for his cue for the grand jete.

A Poem About Simon and Garfunkel

    Kevin McFadden

    A Duet

    Art was long.
    Paul was short.
    Art sang the song.
    Paul was the sort

    Who made one up
    As if from air.
    Paul had more gift.
    Art had more hair –

    Which isn’t to take
    Away from Arts.
    Many sing well
    if someone starts,

    and it robs no Simon
    to get paid like Paul.
    Along was Art’s way
    to be singing at all.

    If Paul robbed some,
    it’s harder revealing
    what’s stuck in his mind
    he stuck to concealing

    So koo-koo-ka-choo
    would stick in our heads.
    it wasn’t Garfunkel,
    someone said Simon said

    When they parted acts.
    Debt one forgets.
    Acoustic is fraught
    with strings over frets,

    Taken together,
    Taken apart.
    Paul lifting from life.
    Life lifting from Art.

    Word of the Times

Oxford's Word of the Year is hypermiling or to hypermile which is defined as "to attempt to maximize gas mileage by making fuel-conserving adjustments to one’s car and one’s driving techniques. Rather than aiming for good mileage or even great mileage, hypermilers seek to push their gas tanks to the limit and achieve hypermileage, exceeding EPA ratings for miles per gallon."
    The finalists are:

frugalista – person who leads a frugal lifestyle, but stays fashionable and healthy by swapping clothes, buying second-hand, growing own produce, etc.

moofer – a mobile out of office worker – ie. someone who works away from a fixed workplace, via Blackberry/laptop/wi-fi etc. (also verbal noun, moofing)

topless meeting – a meeting in which the participants are barred from using their laptops, Blackberries, cellphones, etc.

toxic debt – mainly sub-prime debts that are now proving so disastrous to banks. They were parceled up and sent around the global financial system like toxic waste, hence the allusion.

Losing out are CarrotMob, ecohacking (also known as geoengineering), hockey mom , link bait, luchador, rewilding, staycation, tweet, and wardrobe as a verb.

The Loneliness of Being a Seattle Sports Fan

I instinctively looked at the NBA West standing looking for the Sonics. Haaay! Not only did the Emerald City lost its basketball team but this early, the Seahawks are on to a losing season. Ibanez might be out. The Mariners were at the bottom of the baseball season and they did not even get the top rookie draw. What is there to cheer now? The Huskies?

    Galeano on Barack

EDUARDO GALEANO: What I would most like to see? Well, I would like that Obama, who has now tremendous, historic opportunity, that he never forgets that he’s now going inside the White House. The White House will be his house in the time coming, but this White House was built by black slaves. And I’d like, I hope, that he never, never forgets this.

    Patrick Ewing Jr

I have been an on-off Knicks fan. Off meaning after the season because it's been so long since they made it to the playoffs. But I still watch them and what surprise I got when I heard "Patrick Ewing" playing again. I thought it was another golden replay until I looked closely and it was not the Patrick we used to know. As it turned out, that 4th quarter against the Nets would be the last for Jr. for a while. He was waived last October 27. He may still come back. And right now, the Knicks are 2nd in the East. They are thinking of another trade, Oh boy. I hope it's not another bust.

    Dole's Out

Kay Hagan, a Democratic candidate for Senate in North Carolina,
filed an application to sue her opponent, the incumbent
Republican Elizabeth Dole, for an ad associating Hagan
with the Godless Americans Political Action
Committee. "Godless Americans and Kay Hagan," says the
ad. "She hid from cameras. Took 'Godless' money. What did
Kay Hagan promise in return?" The spot, which lawyers for
Dole called "100 percent factually accurate and truthful,"
concludes with an image of Hagan and a female voiceover
that states, "There is no God."
    Harper's Weekly (before the election)

    Guess what?
    There is a god.
    Dole lost to Hagan.

PGMA Didn't Get to Talk to Obama on the Phone (The Real Story)

PGMA haughtily (the presidential adjective) called Serge R (her press sec) about her "script" before calling Obama.
The notes has the following bullets:
    Congratulate profusely.
Remind him of the 100-year friendship of Philippines and US.
    Hawaii. Ilocanos in Hawaii.
    Indonesia. Very near the Philippines.
Despite my corpulent and dumb husband and sons, I adore skinny, intelligent men.
African students in Philippines. Do not touch on drug and Nigerian scammers.
Remind him of Filipino chef and food tasters in White House.
    Soul food.
    Invite to Philippines
BUT do not talk about abortion and killing journalists

The note ready. She called for Serge to start calling Obama. Five minutes passed. No answer. try again. Ten minutes.
Hindi ba tayo mapapahiya diyan kagaya ng wrong number kay Gov. Baguilat?
    Fifteen minutes.
Hay naku! Connect me now! Now! Now!
    Five minutes. Busy.
The tension in the room can be sensed by a mosquito at nearby Pasig River.
Madame President, I think we got connected.
    Haughtily, she grabbed the phone.
"Hello, President-elect. This is the Philippines President. I would like to congratulate you for being the first Black President..."
    "Uh. Thank you. Salamat"
    "You speak Filipino, President Obama?"
"Uh? This is Mayor Binay. Paano mo nalaman na tatakbo't manana..."

    Oh Bummer

    Obama

    What Obama Means to RH

There will be a status quo on the Roe vs Wade decision, which means abortion would still be legal in the US. There would be no longer a gag rule on RH groups and NGOs and the absurd population decision known as abstinence would be out of favor. Pending natural disasters, the Global Fund would be going to things that matter most to developing countries and that would mean family planning to the Philippines. There would be a huge shift in the US funding for RH and other health concerns.

He bought his in Kinokuniya. I bought mine at Booksale still. He has all the tapes. I was the first however to watch the movie. Willi P thinks San Jose City is his Wobegon, give or take 15 degrees Centigrade. So here's a new poem from the great GK, which first came out in Atlantic Monthly:

    My Career in Radio
    Garrison Keillor

    I’m a radio man for thirty-some years
In St. Paul, an old variety show
Like those I used to hear, my dears,
When I was a child long ago.
To critics, my show is peppered
With little bits of Bob & Ray,
    Jack Benny, and Jean Shepherd,
But those critics are dying (Hooray!)
And to twenty-year-olds who were born
Too late to hear the great Fred Allen
I am the master of the form,
    Sailing the airwaves like Magellan.
If a thief escapes and is not hung
He may be honored by the young.

    Blogging in the Nude

In my lecture on blogging for RH activists (and some who can not be converted), I talked about blogging honestly or undressing yourself when you write. I used as a video the one below but then it wouldn't play in my PowerPoint presentation. I promised to show the class and so here it is:

Long Distance Relationship? Not Good for the Environment

Isn't it time for a Date Local movement, too? Let's start thinking about "sex miles": Just how far was this person shipped to hook up with you? And how many times more efficient would it be to date someone within a 100-mile radius? If the movement spread globally, mirroring either the decentralized development of Local Food co-ops or the manifesto-and-chapter model that built up to the Slow Food movement's mega-confab this summer, its environmental benefits could multiply many times.
