The Best Book? Wao!
I took a very unreliable survey of "The Best Books of 2007" of Village Voice, Esquire, New York Magazine, Salon, Baltimore City Paper, LA Times and Time. Junot Diaz's A Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao won hands down with six mentions followed by A Legacy of Ashes by Tim Weiner, What the Dead Know by Laura Lippman, No One Belongs Here More Than You by Miranda July and The Yiddish Policeman's Ball by Michael Chabon with three mentions. Those with two mentions are The Long Embrace: Raymond Chandler and The Woman He Loved by Judith Freeman; Like You'd Understand Anyway by Jim Shepard; Falling Man by Don Delillo; House of Meetings by Martin Amis; Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows (!); Tree of Smoke by Denis Johnson; Then We Came to The End by Joshua Ferris; and Schulz and Peanuts by David Michaelis.
