Glen Gagarin

You would know when my son is here," said Ernesto Gagarin, father of Iraq hero Staff Sgt. Greg P. Gagarin, who died with four others in Thania, Iraq last June 3 when their Humvee run over an improvised mine.
"Greg loves to set off firecrackers everytime he comes home," said Ernesto, a retired master sergeant in the US Air Force before settling back in their house here in sitio Kinarayan, Caterman barangay.
"Maybe he wouldn't need firecrackers anymore as the US military would be giving him full military honors including the 21-gun salute," he said.
"He never forgot his roots. He always meet with his old classmates and he speaks fluent Ilocano," said Ernesto.
"He's very sociable and easygoing," said eldest brother Gary.
Maybe fireworks would be set off when Greg Gagarin's body would arrive here on Sunday. He will be buried in a nearby cemetery on June 20. Greg's body will be accompanied by his wife Elma and their two children. His family is based in Los Angeles.
Master Sgt. Greg Gagarin, 38, is the most senior of his team supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom and who belonged to the 1st Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) in Fort Lewis, Washington State.
He died of wounds after an improvised explosive device was detonated near their Humvee, said Gary.
Glen was the third of six children. He was born here and studied at the Caterman Elementary School before migrating to the US when he was ten.
He joined the Reserve Corps of the National Guard when he was 17 and joined the Army.
"He loves the action," said Gary. He volunteered for the Operation Desert Storm in 1990. He also was stationed in South Korea and has volunteered for duty repeatedly for Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom since 2003.
"He loved reading military books so he was inclined to join the military." said Ernesto.
"The last time we talked was on the phone when I went to L.A," said Gary. "I told him his children missed him and he said he was coming back on July.
His father said that Greg has started building his retirement home.
Greg stood as best man when his father remarried recently in Candon.
